Shooting
A shot is four questions in order. Here is one complete shot, with real numbers.
An Intercessor shoots at some Boyz with his Bolt Rifle. Open both datasheets if you want to check: every number comes from there.

A worked example
Can I shoot at all?
The Bolt Rifle’s range is 24". Measure: if the Boyz are within 24 inches and your model can see them, you can shoot.
How many dice?
A 2. One model shooting rolls 2 dice. Five Intercessors shooting is 10 dice.
Do I hit?
BS 3+. Every die showing 3 or more hits. The rest are set aside.
Do I wound?
Compare S 4 with T 5. Strength is lower than Toughness: you need 5 or more. Roll one die for each shot that hit.
Do they save?
Your opponent rolls this one. The Boy has Sv 5+, but the Bolt Rifle has AP -1: the save becomes 6+. A 6 stops the wound; anything else lets it through.
How much damage?
D 1, and a Boy has W 1. Every wound that gets through removes one Boy from the table.
The tableDo I wound?
You compare the weapon’s Strength with the target’s Toughness. Nothing else comes into it.
| The comparison | You need | An example |
|---|---|---|
| S is at least twice T | 2+ | Power fist S 8 against Gretchin T 2 |
| S is greater than T | 3+ | Power fist S 8 against Boy T 5 |
| S is equal to T | 4+ | Choppa S 4 against Intercessor T 4 |
| S is lower than T | 5+ | Slugga S 4 against Terminator T 5 |
| S is half T or less | 6+ | Slugga S 4 against Repulsor T 12 |
Read from the top and take the first row that is true: “at least twice” comes before “greater than”, and “half or less” before “lower than”.
These questions never change: do I hit, do I wound, do they save, how much. Only the numbers change from one weapon to the next.
