The Command phase
Your turn starts here. You gain a CP, and units that have taken a beating test their nerve.
This is the first phase of your turn, and two things happen in it, in this order: you gain a command point, then some units take a Battle-shock test.
Watch the words here. The Command phase is the moment; Command Points (CP) are what you spend to play a stratagem; and Leadership (Ld) on your datasheet is a unit’s nerve, a figure like 7+. Two of those three share a name in English — and in French all three are called Commandement, so at a table here you will hear one word for all of them. That is the only real trap on this page.
At the start of every Command phase, both players gain 1 CP. Not only the player whose turn it is: you during your turn, and you again during theirs. Over a full battle round each player therefore gains 2 CP.
You each start the game with 1 CP, and the player going second gets nothing extra. CP you do not spend stay yours: they build up from phase to phase and turn to turn, and nothing resets them.
Then comes Battle-shock. A unit that has lost half of what it started with has to test:
- A unit of several models tests if fewer than half of them are left.
- A single-model unit tests if fewer than half its starting wounds are left.
The test is 2D6, compared against the unit’s Ld. Equal or higher passes, and nothing happens.
A worked example
Your Boyz unit started with 10 models. Four are left. Do you test?
Yes. Half of 10 is 5, and 4 is fewer than 5. The unit takes a Battle-shock test.
What do you roll?
A Boy’s Ld is 7+. You roll 2D6 and need 7 or more.
You roll 5. What does that change?
The unit is Battle-shocked. Its four Boyz counted OC 8 on their objective (OC 2 each); they now count 0 and no longer hold it.
Fail the test, and the unit is Battle-shocked. Three things happen to it:
- Its OC drops to 0: it holds nothing, even sitting on an objective.
- No stratagem can target it.
- If it Falls Back, each model rolls 1D6 and dies on a 1 or a 2.
Two other things happen here. From the 2nd battle round, the end of this phase is when you score for the objectives you are holding. And if a datasheet says “in your Command phase”, this is when.
